Hello ASI and Chapter or Support groups for ASD,
We await the date the on-line website goes LIVE for the course: Social Skills Training for Autism Spectrum Disorders and other interested individuals.
It will go live April 1, 2010, if all goes as planned, and be available through May 31, 2012. During this time school teams can view (parents and anyone interested in the topic as well) the 4 hours content anytime they wish, but a concentrated group of school teams will view it (April-May 2010 and April-May 2011) to be eligible for continued face to face training with Bellini and Madrigal.
The brochure describing the website is attached. Feel free to share this with others who may have interest as well.
I have linked with the Parent Education Connection staff in 6 AEA’s (AEA 267, 9, 11, 13, 14, and Great Prairie) who have designated themselves as Social Skills PEC staff. They have identified resources for parents (and professionals) about social skills that are available in their region. They also will be serving as advocates for intensive social skills provision in the schools. The Moodle course, a password protected web site, also provides a listing of state library holdings on this topic as well as content for assessing and treating social skill deficits in this population.
Our goal is to increase the number of programs in our state providing intensive social skills training to the ASD learner. We want to expand their training and comfortability in addressing all the steps in social skills training:
- assessment of individuals with appropriate tools
- organizing the individuals who will be grouped together
- provide access to materials to support needs and social skills strategies
- understanding the foundations of teaching new social skills
- planning for generalization of skills outside of the trained setting
- supporting the use of new skills by creating new opportunities to reinforce their use in natural settings
Please share this brochure with anyone you know who might be interested in this content. This registration is different than typical trainings we offer and will require each person who wants to view the on line content, to e-mail me for the special password or enrolment information. I will prepare draft e-mails with this information ahead of time, so will accept e-mails of inquiry anytime, and mass e-mails will be sent April 1.
Thanking you in advance for your distribution of this brochure and for your interest in learning more about supporting social skills development. I hope this will spark some additional discussion in your groups and empower you to support social skills development for your children. I apologize that the target groups are providers for school aged individuals and not targeting adult needs as well, but the funding source, Iowa Department of Education, served school aged individuals.
Any questions you have, just e-mail me.
